Health (and humor)

I walked into the exam room, greeted by a spry elder in her 80s.

“How is your health?” I asked.

“It is getting old”, she replied with a smile.

Notice, she wasn’t admitting to being old or to getting old herself.

It was her health that was aging.

A sneaky semantic twist. And off we went into conversating and laughing together. Officially, it was her doctor’s visit.

So, I ask you to consider this morning the same question.

How is your health?

Sit with that question before coming up with any words or answers.

How is your health?

Mental and emotionally, where are you? Physically? Spiritually?

How is your health?

Now, if you feel moved to write about it, draw it out, or share with someone close to you, go for it.

And feel free to channel your inner comedian and take the lead of our elder – sometimes, laughing a bit at life is the best antidote for helping us move forward.

  1. Aging is all about gravity, its keeps getting a bit more intense over time. I keep looking for the dial to turn it down, but can't remember where it is.

    1. I feel super alive today! Usually, I'm in neutral regardless of whatever happens around me, in my life knowing that it will change. But today, I'm happy and grateful to feel this feeling that visits me every so often. I'm looking forward to a weekend with my puppies: a miniature pinscher, a chihuahua and a husky. And a break from the usual demands, and sometimes grueling duties, of cultural duties on weekends.

  2. Hah! As some of us runners describe the effects of aging, "it's not the age, it's the miles!" If only I could turn that odometer back 100K miles! Seriously, I feel like I'm living my best life, amidst the rotating aches and pains (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual)! Blessings...JR.

  3. I am 76 y/o. It's this next 25 that I'm excited about... I am planning on strolling through it as I enjoy each reminder that I am..

  4. Age is just an abstract concept. Aging is for real. But laughter in either setting is healing for the soul.

  5. I wonder at the benefits with the life of Benjamin Button. (In the story he lives life in reverse) Oh if only I knew as a child what I know now. Everything would have been different, my heartaches, blunders and regrets all averted. I love what life/age has brought to me mentally and as far as wisdom. What is hard to take now is all the soreness and the pain that comes with simple things like sneezing and passing gas, Lol. I have learned to appreciate the physical to mental switch and enjoy wisdom, education and experience. Change is in everything and adaptability is health.
